Cleveland Municipal School District
Special Education
- Related Services
- The Office of Related Services coordinates the work of
Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists, Occupational Therapists and Physical
Therapists for Cleveland Municipal School District.
-
- Speech Language Pathologists provide classroom
collaborative and/or direct speech-language therapy services to students between the ages
of 3 and 22 in 122 public and nonpublic schools in the city of Cleveland. In each of these schools they serve as a member of
the educational team to provide consultation and in-service for staff and parents
regarding appropriate speech and language instructional strategies for classroom, home and
community use. Every effort is made by the
pathologist to interface therapy services with school-based plans developing literacy
skills and with student performance on proficiency exams.
To meet the needs of individual students, speech-language pathologists who
specialize in assistive technology may develop a common- citation skills program using an
augmentative or alternate communication system. In
the case of a student with a hearing impairment a non-verbal communication strategy such
as sign language may be used. In addition to
their other duties, Speech-Language Pathologists conduct 34,000 hearing screenings
annually and make referrals to the CMSD audiologists for further hearing assessment.
-
- Twelve physical therapists and twenty-five
occupational
therapists work system-wide to evaluate student motor function as it relates to
achievement of education goals and access to and participation in the general education
environment. These traveling therapists
provide direct therapy, consultation and/or monitoring of students in the least
restrictive environment as determined by the Individualized Educational Program or 504
Plan. They develop programs using
modifications or assistive technology when appropriate, with the primary goal to insure
that the student is functioning in a meaningful way at the highest level of independence
possible across all educational environments preparing students for employment and other
post-school activities. They identify
architectural barriers, which may limit student participation in educational activities
and assist in obtaining necessary supplies and equipment for modifications, which may be
beneficial. As a member of the educational
team, they provide consultation and in-service for staff, parents, and other agency
personnel regarding appropriate motor activities or equipment, which will support the
goals and objectives that the IEP team identifies for students.
